The judging of the award consists of 80 to 100 judges, mostly food professionals, who sample products as a “blind tasting.” They rate the products according to eye appeal, aroma, flavor, and heat scale.

We like it hot!

“Smoked chili powder, smoked paprika powder - it reads so unspectacular. But spice up your dishes with it! And pay attention to your tongue and palate when you eat! That‘s right, they‘ll dance for joy (or burst into flames) because they‘ve never experienced such a flavor explosion before.”

Neither did we, until we set out on a momentous Hungarian vacation a few years ago. As hobby gardeners and confirmed “chili junkies“, we had already experimented a lot with the hot pods in our home garden and tried our hand at growing different chili fruits. It was a matter of honor that we now visited the Puszta in Hungary, the legendary steppe land of the Magyars. Agriculture there is focused on the national spice. If peppers grow so well here, we thought, surely our beloved chilies must also thrive?

Today we know: they do! In Hungary, personally selected farmers grow chili and paprika for “Puszta Peppers“. And we don‘t just inspect regularly, we stand in the field with them. So that we can proudly say: Our shoots are all hand-grown, pricked, set out and finally harvested. In our production hall in Upper Bavaria, we now process over 70,000 bell pepper and chili plants per year.

The fruits are dried, cut into tiny pieces and smoked in a specially constructed smoker. We also make the smoking agents ourselves from purely natural ingredients. In this way, we ensure that peppers and chili take on their unmistakable aroma in the smoke from natural woods and fruits. The result: the unmistakable “Puszta Peppers“- delicious spice creations for an unforgettable taste experience.

But not only in terms of taste, also in terms of spiciness „Puszta Peppers“ satisfy every connoisseur: Starting with the Smoked Erös bell pepper and its only slight spiciness, through the Jalapeño chili with solid basic spiciness, to the Carolina Reaper chili, which is respectfully called the “Grim Reaper“ among chilies.

The somewhat curious numbering, by the way, is the fault of the selection process for the recipes that are finally put on the market.

Originally we had 118 up our sleeve! Several test meals and blind tastings filtered out our favorites, which from now on will hopefully also provide the flavorful finishing touch in your kitchen - just like our motto: WE LIKE IT HOT!
